Abstract
Racism, as a legacy of slavery, is one of the defining factors in the processes of exclusion directed at the Afro-Brazilian population, including the formulation of collective memory and the identification of Cultural Heritage, from which the black presence is still hegemonically excluded. Against this backdrop, this study aims to help advance discussions on structural racism and its influence on the perception of Afro-Brazilian cultural heritage, specifically in the municipality of Viçosa in Minas Gerais, by building a participatory inventory, based on direct dialog with the local population, through which we hope to construct new understandings of local Afro-Brazilian culture, as well as dialog with the appropriations and resignifications related to it, constituting an instrument for education in ethnic-racial relations and combating racism. To this end, an online form was used, in which the population can indicate the Afro-Brazilian cultural assets present in Viçosa, as well as their interpretation of their existence and (in)visibility,in addition to possible resonances of structural racism in their perception. Based on the findings so far, the study indicates that Afro-Brazilian cultural assets in the municipality are poorly recognized, promoted and protected, and that, according to the interviewees, racism is a major influence on this process. On the other hand, the responses indicate that, among the cultural goods recognized, there is a predominance of those of an immaterial nature. This result points to the weight of the "immateriality" of Afro-Brazilian heritage, especially the forms of expression, contrasting with the idea of "material monumentality", which is directly related to Western or Eurocentric "traditions" that are still very present.
