Abstract
The sensitivity of financial markets to the arrival of new information and the resulting impacts on the volatility patterns of agribusiness companies highlight the importance of understanding how news flows affect publicly traded assets. This study investigates the effects of agricultural news coverage, extracted from the Global Database of Events, Language, and Tone (GDELT), on the volatility of the IAGRO B3 sectoral index between 2019 and october 2024. To this end, a multivariate conditional volatility BEKK-GARCH model was employed, allowing the analysis of interdependencies between news sentiment (tone) and index returns. The results indicate that changes in market sentiment, captured through the tone of news headlines, significantly affect the volatility of IAGRO returns, confirming the influence of informational factors in the sector. It is concluded that variations in the sentiment of agriculture-related news exert a statistically significant impact on the volatility of the index composed of agribusiness companies, reinforcing the importance of information in the performance of returns of publicly traded firms. These findings provide useful insights for risk management and contribute to the understanding of informational efficiency in the Brazilian agribusiness sector. Keywords: Agriculture; Market sentiment; Volatility impulse response function; Indice Agronegócio B3; GARCH.
