Abstract
Metodologicamente elegemos a abordagem qualitativa.
This master's research aimed to investigate the narratives of Black students admitted via affirmative action quotas into stricto sensu graduate programs at the Center for Agricultural Sciences (CCA) and the Center for Biological and Health Sciences (CCB) of the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV) in 2024. It sought to understand, through their accounts, how the presence of these quota students has materialized within the graduate programs, in both personal and academic spheres. The research is significant for gathering detailed information on the realities faced by quota students at the CCA and CCB regarding access, retention, and knowledge production. These data are crucial for understanding and re-evaluating affirmative action and inclusion policies addressing gender, race, and class as well as for devising short- and long- term strategies to ensure student support, reduce dropout rates, and contribute to rethinking public policies within and for the Federal University of Viçosa. In this context, the study was guided by the following question: Has the affirmative action policy in higher education specifically through racial quotas in graduate programs qualitatively altered the student profile of higher education institutions and the scientific knowledge produced in these academic spaces? Methodologically, a qualitative approach was adopted. Initially, a questionnaire was sent to all Black quota students in the selected centers at the Federal University of Viçosa. Based on the questionnaire responses, semi-structured interviews were conducted with those willing to participate in the study. The results indicate that UFV implements racial quota policies across all graduate programs (master’s and doctoral) within the CCA and CCB. It was also observed that students experience racial and gender-based discrimination. Others, however, recognize how prejudices manifest and are able to name them. Regarding the awarding of scholarships, only one of the programs links admission via the racial quota system to the receipt of a scholarship. Thus, affirmative action measures involving racial quotas are significant and impact the lives of the students who participated in this study. Regarding knowledge production, it was observed that albeit indirectly research topics do intersect with racial issues; however, given that the fields involved are Agricultural and Biological Sciences, the majority of the research does not address this theme. Keywords: Affirmative action policies; quotas in graduate education; intersectionality; knowledge production.
