The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of auricular acupuncture in reducing levels of depression, anxiety, and stress in parents and/or legal guardians of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This is a quasi- experimental study conducted in the city of Muriaé – MG, carried out between April and August 2024. The research was conducted in three phases. The first consisted of a pre-test assessment, involving the application of the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) questionnaire to 57 family members of children with autism. In the second phase, the intervention was applied to individuals who exhibited moderate, severe, or very severe levels of anxiety, depression, or stress (n=42). These participants completed a sociodemographic questionnaire and took part in weekly auricular acupuncture sessions targeting the Shenmen, Kidney, Autonomic Nervous System, Liver, Spleen, Heart, Brainstem, Lung, and Liver Yang 2 points, over a period of five weeks. Three participants were excluded due to discontinuity. In the third phase, after the intervention, the DASS-21 scale was reapplied to assess the effects of the intervention. The auricular acupuncture sessions took place at the Municipal Multidisciplinary Pediatric Care Outpatient Clinic, where children diagnosed with autism receive their treatments. The sample had a mean age of 37.07 years (±7.6), with a predominance of females (89.7%) and a higher proportion of married participants (53.8%). The results showed a statistically significant reduction in all three constructs assessed – depression, anxiety, and stress, when comparing levels before and after the intervention (p < 0.001). These findings suggest that auricular acupuncture can be considered an effective and viable therapeutic strategy for the treatment and management of family members of children with autism spectrum disorder, offering a valuable alternative in supporting these individuals.
