Memória judaica e literatura portuguesa: a Consolação às Tribulações de Israel, de Samuel Usque (1553)

Abstract

A Consolação às Tribulações de Israel (1553) de Samuel Usque é o principal testemunho literário da expulsão e da diáspora a que foram submetidos os judeus portugueses, a partir de 1531. Com inclinaçao memorialística, essa obra explora a tragédia e o exílio que a intolerância religiosa e a ação da Inquisição impuseram aos judeus ibéricos. Em seu texto, Samuel Usque comenta que a consolação efetiva se obtém comparando os males passados com os experimentos no presente. Tal intenção levou o autor a revisitar as tragédias sofridas pelo povo hebreu, desde os tempos bíblicos até a época das perseguições da Inquisição.

A Consolação às Tribulações de Israel (1553) by Samuel Usque is the main literary testimony of the expulsion and dispersion that the Portuguese Jews were submitted, beginning in the year of 1531. With a memory inclination, this work explores the tragedy and the exile that the religious intolerance and the action of the Inquisition imposed to the Iberian Jews. In his text, Samuel Usque comments that the real consolation is obtained by comparing the last evils with the experiments in the present. Such intention took the author to revisit the suffered tragedies by the Hebrew people, since the biblical times to the time of the persecutions of the Inquisition.
