Abstract
Three experiments were carried out to determine the nutritional requirements of potassium (K) for male Ross broiler chickens, for the periods of 1-21, 22-42 and 43-53 days of age. The parameters evaluated were weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion, water intake of the birds and dry matter, sodium and K content of the excreta. In each experiment a completely randomized experimental design with six treatments (K levels) was used. Basal diets, deficient for K, were supplemented with K carbonate to result in 0.30, 0.44, 0.58, 0.72, 0.86 e 1.00% K. Considering weight gain, the estimated requirements were 0.628, 0.714 and 0.798% K, for the studied periods of 8-21, 22-42 and 43-53 days of age, respectively. The birds which received less or more K than estimated had higher water intake and consequently low excreta's dry matter. The K content of the excreta increased linearly, as well as the K retention, while the sodium excretion or retention were not affected by K levels in the diet.
