Abstract
This dissertation investigates music education at the State Conservatory of Music of Visconde do Rio Branco, Minas Gerais, between 1953 and 1969, focusing on the appropriation of folkloric and popular elements within a musical education shaped by the so-called “conservatory model.” The Conservatory was established as part of the political and cultural project of Juscelino Kubitschek’s administration as governor of Minas Gerais, which encouraged the expansion of public conservatories throughout the state as an expression of cultural modernization and artistic appreciation. The temporal scope adopted corresponds to the period between the effective beginning of the institution’s activities, in 1953, and the curricular changes introduced in the conservatories of Minas Gerais in 1969, thus making it possible to examine a relatively stable configuration and its teaching practices. The research demonstrates that, although conservatory education maintained a strong Eurocentric orientation, centered on classical music and instrumental technique, there was a significant incorporation of Brazilian folkloric and popular repertoires, particularly through canto orfeônico (orfeonic singing). This incorporation was related to the cultural nationalism of the 1930s to the 1960s and to policies promoting folklore implemented by the Brazilian State. At the same time, this practice maintained a hierarchy in which European musical language remained predominant. As sources, the dissertation draws on the analysis of curricula, class registers, and concert programs from the Conservatory, identifying the presence of religious, dramatic, romantic, satirical, and regional songs with folkloric and popular characteristics that were adapted to formal music education. The study brings together Cultural History, Musicology, Heritage Studies, and Education, emphasizing the Visconde do Rio Branco Conservatory as a space for negotiation between traditions of concert music and popular culture. Finally, the research contributes to the preservation of the Conservatory’s institutional memory and to debates on musical heritage and Brazilian cultural identity.
