Abstract
With the aim of investigating and discussing the adaptations made over the centuries at the Teatro Municipal - Casa da Ópera de Ouro Preto, we present the hypothesis that the building reproduces structural spatial aspects and fundamental concepts associated with 18th-century Italian opera houses. Simultaneously configured as cultural heritage and as a space for artistic production by the community, this reproduction is not a formal copy, but rather an appropriation of a consolidated typology, perceptible in the spatial organization, in the relationship between stage and audience, and in the technical devices that shape the scenic experience. Given this context, we defend the thesis that the performative function of the Ouro Preto Opera House, including all technical aspects of the stage, among them, centrally, stage lighting, must be inseparably integrated into the building's preservation projects. This should constitute a guideline for the proper functioning of the space, the safety of people, and the conservation of heritage assets. This approach also presupposes careful observation of the condition of the electrical installations. Thus, it is characterized as qualitative descriptive and exploratory research, structured as a case study called a Single Incorporated Case. To this end, an assessment was carried out on the maintenance of the structures, installations, and adaptations that have made scenic lighting possible over the centuries, taking into account the preservation and maintenance of heritage, in accordance with current regulations. The findings of the research indicate challenges in terms of documentary research, as part of the records relating to lighting practices in the 18th and 19th centuries are fragmented or non-existent. It is clear that this is a theater at risk, because despite being a nationally recognized heritage site, it faces difficulties in terms of conservation, financing, and continued use. In this sense, it is necessary that this theater be kept in use, adapting to contemporary technical needs without losing sight of its original features. To this end, the Opera House must be included in cultural policies at the municipal, state, and federal levels in order to promote conscious tourism, community use, and heritage education. Keywords: opera house; stage lighting; Ouro Preto; heritage.
