The recurrent conflict between humans and wildlife has been intensified with the expansion of agriculture. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the perception of wildlife in general and hunting as management tool by farmers, the occurrence of bird predation and damage caused in plantations of corn (Zea mays L.) and guava (Psidium guajava L.) in the Zona da Mata of the Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil. Data were collected by questionnaires sent to farmers from 26 counties and by visits to five guava and eight corn plantations, to assess the damage caused by and to identify the bird species causing problems. Animals such as parakeets, pigeons, capybaras, and guans, observed during the study, showed the adaptation of wildlife to live near humans, causing, in some instances cases, to conflicting relationships. As expected, birds caused causing higher losses to corn and guava producers in the Zona da Mata region. The data obtained in this study may assist in future management plans for the identified species. They can also help in the search for viable alternatives that could avoid or minimize damage and, thus, the conflict between humans and wildlife.
