Abstract
In my Master's dissertation, I relate moments of change with regard to language policies, directly to the professional trajectory of graduates of the Portuguese-Spanish program from the Language and Literature Department of Federal University of Viçosa (DLA/UFV). Therefore, the research question that guides this study is: "How do language policies affect the professional trajectory in the Spanish language for graduates of the Portuguese-Spanish program at the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), and what are their future prospects in the profession?". Thus, the general aim was to establish the connection between the professional trajectories of these graduates and the laws that govern the teaching of foreign languages in Brazil. Additionally, the specific aims included recognizing facilitators and obstacles in their trajectories as Spanish teachers; critically analyzing the implementation of laws based on the participants' experiences; identifying similarities and differences in the trajectories of these professionals in order to problematize the impact of such laws on the researched group; determining whether laws are decisive for professionals to work in the field or if they followed their paths independently of language policies, and finally, discovering what their perspectives are regarding the future of the profession. It is important to emphasize that all aims were achieved. In response to the research question, the graduates participating in this research are affected by the (lack of) language policies for Spanish when they need to work teaching Portuguese classes, engaging in the informal market, giving private classes, or undertaking revisions and translations of texts, for example. This is also the case when they need to pursue another degree to broaden their possibilities of entering into the job market, for example. In this dissertation, I discuss a problem of national interest, as it problematizes social and political issues. Socially, because I propose to highlight the situation of a group of workers in the country, and politically, precisely because I combine the policies to the professional trajectories of the aforementioned graduates. Keywords: Spanish. Language policies. Graduates. Narratives
