Abstract
From the second half of the seventies the label “(the) dictator novel” has been fully incorporated into the metalanguage used by writers, readers, critics and editors. Not only has this overuse of the term been the foundation of the progressive consolidation of the term as the typical manifestation of the Spanish American political novel, but it has also been the base for its institutionalization within the Continent’s literary system. Yet an overview of the extensive bibliography of the sub-genre leads us to identify different interpretative tendencies whose heterogenous approaches, considerations and conclusions reveal the marked instability of its definition over time. This has made the label less functional for the purpose of classifying and interpretingan extremely complex literary phenomenon. The aim of this article is therefore to reflect on the fundamental causes of the instability of the generic concept in order to identify the methodological problems which make a precise understanding of the sub-genre more difficult.
