Abstract
Mountain coffee farming imposes constraints on conventional mechanization, particularly for fertilizer application, due to rugged topography, limitations on the use of large-scale machinery, and the significant share of fertilizers in production costs. Under these conditions, the adoption of Precision Agriculture, especially variable-rate fertilization, remains limited among smallholders, mainly because of the lack of portable, adapted, and cost-effective equipment. In this context, the present study aimed to develop and evaluate a metering mechanism for the spot application at fixed and variable rates. The prototype consisted of a fluted-roller volumetric metering mechanism driven by a direct-current electric motor and installed on an existing backpack fertilizer spreader platform composed of a commercial fertilizer hopper and an Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The experimental evaluation comprised laboratory and field trials. Laboratory tests included physical characterization of the fertilizers, calibration of the applied mass as a function of the mechanism’s rotation angle, and investigation of the effects of transverse inclination, hopper fill level, and prescribed rate under a 3 × 3 × 5 factorial design. Precision and accuracy indicators of the applied mass were also determined. Subsequently, system performance was assessed under field conditions in georeferenced cells with differentiated application rates, analyzing the consistency between prescribed and applied values as well as the effective field capacity. Laboratory results showed a linear relationship between rotation angle and applied mass for the evaluated fertilizers, as well as significant effects of transverse inclination, hopper fill level, and prescribed rate on the applied mass. The mechanism demonstrated high precision (coefficient of variation below 2%) and high accuracy (relative error below 1%) under controlled conditions. In the field, the onboard system successfully performed automatic rate variation between cells, maintaining close agreement between prescribed and applied doses in most treatments. It is concluded that the developed mechanism presents satisfactory technical performance for the localized application of granular fertilizers at fixed and variable rates, demonstrating potential for use in production systems with restrictions on conventional mechanization, such as mountain coffee farming. Keywords: precision agriculture; variable-rate fertilization; volumetric metering mechanism; backpack fertilizer applicator; granular fertilizers
