Abstract

Coffee leaf rust, caused by Hemileia vastatrix, is the disease that most compromises coffee production worldwide, with losses that can reach 35 to 50% of the harvest. Chemical control, although effective, increases costs, puts pressure on the environment, and faces regulatory restrictions, which stimulates the search for biological alternatives. This work evaluated the efficiency of Bacillus subtilis (strain QST 713), flutriafol fungicide, and the combination of both in the management of rust in three arabica coffee cultivars with different levels of genetic resistance: Catiguá MG2 (resistant), Catucaiam 24/137 (moderately resistant), and Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144 (susceptible). The experiment was conducted in the field in Paula Cândido, Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais, in a randomized block design with a 3 × 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement consisting of three cultivars, two levels of the biological factor (with and without B. subtilis), two levels of the chemical factor (with and without flutriafol), and two application methods (foliar spraying or drench), with three replications each. The combination of 'without biological and without chemical' for each cultivar was considered the absolute control within the factorial. Severity was assessed by digital image analysis, and the data, after transformation by (x + 0.5), were subjected to analysis of variance and the Scott-Knott test (5%). There was no statistical difference among treatments (biological, chemical, and combined), but the three cultivars differed from each other (p < 0.0001): Catuaí IAC 144 showed an average severity of 6.20%, Catucaiam 24/137 recorded 2.16%, and Catiguá MG2 0.38%. The non- parametric Kruskal-Wallis analysis confirmed the results. The experimental period was marked by prolonged drought (54 mm accumulated between April and September 2024), which may have reduced pathogen pressure and limited differentiation among treatments. Genetic resistance was the predominant factor in rust management under the tested conditions, with clear separation among the three resistance levels.
