Abstract
This study aims at comprehending the role of Baron Nils Posse in the development and circulation of Swedish Gymnastics in the United States between 1885 and 1915. To this end, we conducted an investigation aimed at understanding the outlined strategies, the established relationships, the occupied spaces and the realized movements. Nils Posse was born in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, and moved to the United States in 1885. In Boston, he led a range of activities linked to Swedish Gymnastics, including writing books and articles and teaching gymnastics to different people. Posse's initiative to promote this method in a foreign land is related to the training policy of the Royal Central Institute of Gymnastics (GCI), since this movement of people contributed to the recognition of the Institute. Swedish gymnastics was part of a European body education movement that emerged at the end of the 18th century. By systematizing this practice, Pehr Henrik Ling (1776-1839) sought to forge a Swedish body prepared for the challenges of their time. The application of rational and systematized exercises became an instrument for renewing vigor, morale and cultivating physical fitness. We have highlighted the importance of understanding the process of circulation of Swedish gymnastics as a cultural object based on the individual and their paths. The set of sources used are books, manuals and The Posse Gymnasium Journal, as well as historical books that allow us to understand the context in which Nils Posse built his career, trained and moved to Boston. This research is characterized as historical and documentary, based on Cultural History, from which we seek to produce a narrative about the object of study. As a result, we observed that, even in the face of some resistance, the gymnastics promoted by Nils Posse was accepted and disseminated among the population of Boston. His work, starting with the establishment of his “Posse Gymnasium”, boosted a series of actions, which materialized in the training of teachers, the writing of books, the publication of a newspaper, the dissemination of medical gymnastics and the teaching of Swedish gymnastics to children. His death in 1895 did not interrupt his project, which was continued by his wife Rose Posse, and which remained important for more than two decades.
