Variações morfométricas em populações do sapo-de-chifre Proceratophrys Boiei (Anura: Odontophrynidae) no sudeste do Brasil

Abstract

O Proceratophrys boiei é um sapo edêmico da Mata Atlântica. Muito se é conhecido da sua história natural e estudos moleculares, porém o estudo da sua morfologia possui algumas lacunas. O presente trabalho buscou compreender se existem variações morfológicas nas populações genéticas conhecidas via análises estatísticas multivariadas e se estas podem separar as diferentes populações de P. boiei. O estudo, que teve amostragem de 163 indivíduos, mostrou que existe uma variação significativa em duas populações distintas (p < 0,03), sendo a distância inter-nasal e o comprimento da cabeça os caracteres que mais variaram. Também foi resgatado diferença estatística para dividir as populações como foi proposto em estudos de filogenia molecular, porém a metodologia usada nesse trabalho não conseguiu identificar a estrutura morfológica responsável por isso. Esses resultados podem ser usados como referências para futuros estudos, os quais podem contribuir para a discussão de especiação dentro das diferentes populações. Proceratophrys boiei is an endemic frog in the Atlantic Forest. Much is known about its natural history and molecular studies, but there are still gaps in the study of its morphology. This research aimed to understand if there are morphological variations among the known genetic populations through multivariate statistical analyses and if these variations can differentiate the different populations of P. boiei. The study, which included a sample of 163 individuals, revealed significant variation in two distinct populations (p < 0.03), with inter-nasal distance and head length being the characters that showed the most variation. Additionally, statistical differences were found that could divide the populations as proposed in molecular phylogenetic studies, but the methodology used in this study was unable to identify the morphological structure responsible for this division. These results can serve as references for future studies, which may contribute to the discussion of speciation within different populations.
