Arte, trabalho e indústria na primeira metade do Século XX: Eugênio de Proença Sigaud e a representação do trabalho operário

Abstract

Esta pesquisa de cunho bibliográfico e documental objetivou refletir sobre a representação artística do mundo industrial urbano brasileiro na primeira metade do século XX e investigar a representação do trabalho na obra de Eugênio de Proença Sigaud (1899-1979), “o pintor dos operários”, cuja arte não era um ato gratuito, mas de compromissos artísticos, políticos e sociais. O cerne da pesquisa é a relação entre a arte e a representação artística do trabalho no momento em que o Modernismo se consolidava na sociedade brasileira, ou seja, como o trabalho urbano-industrial era representado pela arte. Foram realizadas análises de documentos, pesquisas iconográficas, entrevistas com especialistas, examinadas a pintura mural e suas telas que representam trabalhadores da construção civil e de outros segmentos sociais. Verificou-se ainda a dimensão política, social e educativa do modernismo brasileiro com questões históricas da primeira metade do século XX, bem como os impactos do muralismo mexicano na pintura brasileira a partir da década de 1930. Por meio dos estudos de Representações Sociais, discutiu-se também a função social de uma arte engajada como formação política e a dimensão da mesma como princípio educativo. This bibliographic and documentary research aimed to reflect on the artistic representation of the Brazilian urban industrial world in the first half of the 20th century and to investigate the depiction of labor in the work of Eugênio de Proença Sigaud (1899-1979), "the painter of workers," whose art was not a gratuitous act but one of artistic, political and social commitments. The core of the research is the relationship between art and the artistic representation of labor at the moment when Modernism was being consolidated in Brazilian society – specifically, how urban- industrial labor was portrayed through art. The study involved analyzing documents, conducting iconographic research, interviewing experts, and examining mural paintings and canvases depicting construction workers and other social segments. Furthermore, the political, social, and educational dimensions of Brazilian Modernism were examined in relation to historical issues of the first half of the 20th century, as well as the impact of Mexican muralism on Brazilian painting from the 1930s. Through the study of Social Representations, the social function of engaged art as political education and its dimension as an educational principle were also discussed.
