Abstract
Green hydrogen, produced through water electrolysis using renewable energy sources, has been widely considered a strategic energy carrier for the global energy transition and decarbonization. In this context, proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWE) stand out as one of the most promising technologies for producing high-purity hydrogen. However, the performance and durability of these systems strongly depend on the stability of the materials used at the anode, where iridium-based catalysts (Ir) are typically employed due to their high resistance in acidic media and under high anodic potentials. To reduce the amount of iridium used and improve the dispersion of the active material, the use of stable oxide supports has been extensively investigated. Among these materials, antimony-doped tin oxide (ATO) has received significant attention, since the incorporation of antimony (Sb) into the SnO2 structure can modify the structural and morphological properties of the support. Despite these advantages, the chemical stability of ATO remains a challenge, as the leaching of the Sb dopant under severe anodic conditions may compromise the structural integrity of the material over time. In this context, the objective of this work was to systematically investigate the effect of varying the antimony content in ATO supports on the stability of iridium oxide-based catalysts (IrOx/ATO). For this purpose, ATO supports with different Sb doping levels were synthesized, including undoped SnO2 and ATO materials containing between 3% and 10% antimony. Subsequently, IrOx catalysts were deposited onto these supports. Structural characterization indicated that the presence of Sb influences parameters such as the average crystallite size and the structural organization of the material. The results indicate that the stability of the support represents one of the main challenges for the development of supported materials intended for operation under severe anodic conditions. Higher antimony contents were found to promote dopant leaching processes, which may lead to the progressive degradation of the support over time. Therefore, the findings suggest that controlling the Sb doping level is an important factor in the development of ATO-based supports, requiring a balance between structural modification of the material and resistance to degradation under harsh operational conditions.
