Abstract
The capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), the world’s largest rodent, is a semi-aquatic, herbivorous animal that lives in groups and is adapted to living in highly anthropized areas. Due to its ecological habits and its position in the food chain, the species has the potential to serve as a bioindicator of environmental quality. In this context, the present study aimed to characterize chemical elements in four types of biological samples and to estimate the genome size of these animals using leukocyte pap. This information can guide monitoring activities in human-altered environments. Samples of hair, feces, blood, and serum were collected from 20 individuals from the Paraopeba River Basin, to quantify the chemical elements, namely: aluminum (Al), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), and manganese (Mn). Leukocyte paste was also used to estimate the genome via flow cytometry. The results of metal bioaccumulation showed that the ten selected chemical elements were found in hair and feces samples, with only 5 and 6 detected in blood and serum, respectively. The chemical elements with the highest concentrations in the four sample types were aluminum and iron, while cadmium was the toxic metal with the lowest concentrations observed in fur and feces. The results of the flow cytometry analyses used to estimate genome size showed no difference between males and females. Keywords: capybara; toxic metals; macronutrients; genome; Paraopeba Basin.
