Abstract
Introduction: Differences in performance due to age variations among players born in the same year have been termed the relative age effect (RAE). The RAE has been studied in different contexts and soccer championships in Brazil, but there is no scientific evidence of its occurrence. Objectives: Identify whether the effect of relative age influences player participation in the Bahia Under-20 Soccer Championship. Methodology: The sample consisted of 181 under-20 soccer players with a mean age of 19.7±0.87, participants of the Bahian U-20 Men's Soccer Championship, 2015 edition. Data collection was performed through a survey conducted in the Daily Information Bulletin of the Brazilian Soccer Confederation (https://bid.cbf.com.br), containing the date of birth of all. Players were divided according to each player's quartiles of birth. Results: The chi-square test (2 )revealed statistically significant differences in the distribution of players between quartiles (2 (3)=107,586; p<.001). Comparing each quartiles, it was possible to observe differences between Q1 and Q2 (2 (1)= 49.98; p<.001), Q1 and Q3 (2(1)= 30.68; p=.04), Q1 and Q4 (2(1)= 30.76; p=.03), Q2 and Q3 (2(1)= 51.85; p<0.001) and, Q2 and Q4 (2(1)= 51.50; p<.001). In all observed differences, higher frequencies of births in the initial quartiles of the year are highlighted. Conclusion: It is concluded that there is the influence of the Relative Age Effect on the participation of players in the Bahia U20 Soccer Championship in its edition held .
