Abstract

Este artigo tem por finalidade fazer uma reflexão sobre os festejos de Carnaval ocorridos em Minas Gerais no século XIX. A discussão procura evidenciar os embates travados pela sociedade brasileira e a mineira, em particular, quanto ao estabelecimento dessa nova forma de comemorar os três dias anteriores ao início da Quaresma, em substituição ao Entrudo, festejo carnavalesco de grande popularidade no Brasil desde a época colonial.

This article aims to reflect upon the Carnival celebrations held in Minas Gerais in the 19th century. The discussion searches for evidencing the shocks taken by the Brazilian society and the miner one, and, in particular, related to the establishment of this new way of celebrating the three days before the beginning of the Quaresm, in substitution to the Shrovetide, carnival celebration of great popularity in Brazil since the colonial age.
