Abstract
Leguminosae comprises approximately 770 genera and over 19,500 species, ranking third among angiosperms and boasting numerous species of economic importance. Among its six subfamilies, Papilionoideae is the most representative, with approximately 14,000 species distributed across 30 tribes, Phaseoleae being the largest, with eight subtribes. The subtribe Clitoriinae comprises five genera: Barbieria DC., Centrosema (DC.) Benth., Clitoria L., Clitoriopsis R. Wilczek, and Periandra Mart. ex Benth., with 106 species, grouped by their resupinate flowers, glabrous calyx interior, bracteoles, and uncinate microtrichomes. The objective of this study was to conduct a floristic-taxonomic inventory of the subtribe Clitoriinae for the Espírito Santo state, in addition to conducting a linear morphometry study to evaluate leaf morphological variation in Centrosema brasilianum (L.) Benth. in brazilian biomes, this study aims to assist in a potentially better internal taxonomic delimitation of the taxon. The study was based on the analysis of specimens deposited in the CAP, CEN, CVRD, MBML, RB, SAMES, VIC, and VIES herbaria. Descriptions, identification keys, illustrations, and comments on the taxonomy, common names, uses, geographic distribution, and preferred habitats of the species are provided. Three genera and 12 species of the subtribe Clitoriinae were identified in Espírito Santo: Centrosema (9 spp.), Clitoria (2 spp.), and Periandra (2 spp.). Centrosema plumieri (Turpin ex Pers.) Benth. is a new occurrence record for the state. Centrosema sp. and Periandra sp. found in the municipalities of Santa Teresa and Linhares, respectively, are likely new species to science. The main characters used in the taxonomy of the subtribe were the absence or presence of a calcar on the standard, the shape of the calyx, the shape and size of the calyx laciniae and bracteoles, and the type of stigma. Among the species occurring in Espírito Santo, Centrosema brasilianum (L.) Benth. exhibits high morphological plasticity, and morphometric studies of the leaves of this species showed that its populations are not homogeneous, with significant differences at regional scales influenced by environmental and ecological factors. The phytogeographic domain that presented the greatest morphometric differentiation was the Pantanal. Keywords: centrosema; fabaceae; floristics; Atlantic Forest
