Abstract
Thermal and energy simulation of buildings is a practice used to facilitate the implementation of new techniques and technologies aimed at improving comfort in buildings and finding efficient solutions. In view of this, to ensure that the simulated data accurately represent the actual thermal behaviour of buildings, standardisation is required in the calibration processes of numerical models based on empirical data, achieved through continuous environmental monitoring. However, the practical application of standard instrumentation protocols often comes up against local physical conditions and the need to customise methodological guidelines. The overall objective of this study is to develop, apply and validate an integrated methodology for environmental monitoring and thermo-energetic analysis for the Monitored Performance Space (EDEM) at the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), investigating the behaviour of the building envelope under real climatic conditions through an experimental field programme. The research is structured in three stages: a literature review, focusing on a global mapping of laboratories and the ISO 9869-1 (2014) standard; experimental application of customised instrumentation to the EDEM infrastructure, defining the positioning of physical sensors and data collection routines; and, finally, the calibration of the computational model using the defined metrics. Statistical validation was based on ASHRAE Guideline 14 (2023), using internally monitored environmental data and external meteorological records from the UFV Meteorological Station over a one-year historical cycle. The results confirmed the initial thermal similarity between the zones assessed in the regulatory (default) phase and quantified the thermal mass potential of the building envelope. In the calibration process carried out using EnergyPlus software, the statistical coefficients recorded a maximum cvRMSE of 5.48% and an RMSE error below the prescribed limit of 2°C. It is concluded that the structured method not only validates the investigations at EDEM but also establishes itself as a replicable benchmark to underpin similar experiments in other laboratories located in under-represented climatic contexts. Keywords: Environmental monitoring, monitoring protocol, simulation of the thermal and energy performance of buildings, calibration of computational models.
