Abstract
Durante os anos do bispado de D. Antônio Ferreira Viçoso (1844-1875) na Diocese de Mariana, Minas Gerais, ele se deparou com muitos religiosos que viviam em desacordo com os ideais de Roma. No entanto, um desses embates teve grande repercussão, uma vez que envolveu o bispo, o governo imperial e o Cônego Honorário José de Sousa e Silva Roussim. Com base nesse confronto de interesses, que durou aproximadamente 15 anos, esse artigo pretende analisar a noção de direito, obediência, submissão, assimilação e resistência, em que se inseria a cultura religiosa naquele período.

However, one of those clashes had a great repercussion inasmuch as it involved the bishop, the Imperial government and the Honorific Canon José de Sousa e Silva Roussim. Based in these confront of interests, which lasted for approximately 15 years, this article intends to analyze the notion of right, obedience, submission, assimilation and resistance, in which the religions culture of that time would insert itself.
