Diferenças entre espécies de besouros do gênero Gonipterus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) de diferentes estados do Brasil

Abstract

O eucalipto é importante para a economia internacional, beneficiando diversos tipos de indústrias. Pragas desfolhadoras causam prejuízos econômicos e ecológicos em plantios de eucalipto. Besouros do gênero Gonipterus Schoenherr (Curculionidae) são alguns dos principais desfolhadores de Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae) em várias regiões do planeta. Os prejuízos causados por essas pragas, a baixa eficácia de seu inimigo natural em algumas regiões e a existência de um complexo de espécies crípticas aumentam a necessidade de estudos sobre este gênero. O objetivo foi verificar possíveis diferenças taxonômicas entre besouros do gênero Gonipterus, coletados em diferentes estados do Brasil, e redescrever sua morfologia. Larvas e adultos de Gonipterus, armazenados em álcool, foram enviados por empresas florestais de diferentes estados brasileiros. Os indivíduos recebidos foram identificados, sua morfologia e ocorrência analisada, e sua morfologia redescrita. Insetos oriundos das regiões Sul e Sudeste do Brasil foram identificados como Gonipterus platensis. Nenhum indivíduo de Gonipterus pulverulentus foi coletado nessas regiões. A morfologia das larvas e adultos de G. platensis e sua re-descrição não indicaram diferenças com o registrado em literatura. A área de ocorrência do inseto é semelhante à registrada na literatura. A triagem, análise e re-descrição da morfologia das larvas e adultos de Gonipterus não detectaram diferenças ou indicações de novas espécies do gênero Gonipterus em diferentes estados do Brasil. Defoliating pests cause economic and ecological damage in eucalyptus plantations. Beetles of the genus Gonipterus Schoenherr (Curculionidae) are some of the main defoliators of Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae) in several regions of the planet. The damage caused by these pests, the low effectiveness of their natural enemy in some regions and the existence of a complex of cryptic species increase the need for studies on this genus. The objective was to verify possible taxonomic differences between beetles of the genus Gonipterus, collected in different states of Brazil, and to redescribe their morphology. Larvae and adults of Gonipterus, stored in alcohol, were sent by forestry companies from different Brazilian states. The individuals received were identified, their morphology and occurrence analyzed, and their morphology redescribed. Insects from the South and Southeast regions of Brazil were identified as Gonipterus platensis. No individual of Gonipterus pulverulentus was collected in these regions. The morphology of larvae and adults of G. platensis and its re-description did not indicate differences with what is registered in the literature. The area of occurrence of the insect is similar to that reported in the literature. Screening, analysis and re-description of the morphology of larvae and adults of Gonipterus did not detect differences or indications of new species of the genus Gonipterus in different states of Brazil.
