Abstract
Getúlio Vargas foi um dos maiores conhecedores da propaganda política na história brasileira. Como ninguém, soube articular ideias e fazer com que as massas populares aderissem ao seu projeto e apoiassem o seu governo. Por isso, Vargas é classificado como “populista”, adjetivo constantemente usado na tentativa de definir algumas figuras políticas contemporâneas. Tendo essas questões em mente, este
trabalho buscará entender, com aparato metodológico da Linguística Textual, quais estratégias argumentativas usadas por Vargas contribuíram para que ele se tornasse a figura
amada que foi. Além disso, tentará traçar possíveis semelhanças entre seus discursos e uma entrevista dada pelo ex-presidente
Lula, uma dessas figuras contemporâneas chamadas cotidianamente de populistas.
Getulio Vargas was one of the leading experts about political propaganda in Brazilian history. He knew how to articulate ideas to obtain mass approval of his government. So, Vargas is classified as “populist”, adjective used many times in order to describe contemporary political figures. With these issues in mind, and using methodology from Textual Linguistics, this paper aims to understand the argumentative strategies used by Vargas that helped him to become a so beloved figure. Moreover, the paper attempts to trace possible similarities between his speeches and an interview given by the Brazilian ex-president Lula, one of these contemporary figures classified as populist.
