Abstract
Introduction: Studies show that performance indicators ball possession and passes can be considered success factors for successful teams. Thus, it is important to analyze the sectors where these indicators are made, checking if there is a difference between the most successful and least successful teams in the competition. Objective: Compare the sectors in which the ball possession and passing performance indicators were located and carried out between the teams with the highest and lowest scores in the Premier League. Methodology: The sample was composed of teams participating in the Premier League, Seasons 2014-2015 to 2018-2019, analyzing the first four teams placed (n=20) and the last four (n=20) of each season. Match average data and other statistical data were collected on the whoscored.com website. The final average of possession of the ball, passes and zones of actions in three sectors of the field, were analyzed, being: sector of attack, sector of midfield and sector of defense. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to verify normality and the t and MannWhitney tests to compare the action zones, considering the value of p<0,05 for the level of significance. Results: It was possible to observe that the best teams had the highest average percentage of ball possession (57,2% against 45,8%), of the group with the worst classifieds; more passes made to the midfield sector (307,0 against 214,5); more passes to the attack sector (209,9 against 143,4) and average in percentage of the zone of action in the attack sector (30,9% against 25,8%), thus indicating statistically different results (p<0.05). Conclusion: Comparing the sectors of the field, the best teams obtained significant superior results in passes made to the sectors of midfield and attack, with actions in possession of the ball in the attack zone for a longer time, in relation to the group of the last four placed.
