Guido Thomaz Marlière e os índios Botocudo nos sertões do Leste (1818-1824)

Abstract

Buscamos compreender as relações estabelecidas nas fronteiras da civilização entre os índios Botocudo e os grupos militares responsáveis pela sua pacificação. Analisamos as correspondências do então Diretor de Índios de Minas Gerais (1818-1824), Guido Thomaz Marlière, e suas dinâmicas da atuação junto aos povos indígenas, acentuadamente os Puri, Coropó e Coroado, genericamente conhecidos como botocudos devido aos objetos que utilizam nos lábios e orelhas, à semelhança de botoques. A construção do Estado Nacional, no decorrer do século XIX, toca a questão do relacionamento com os povos indígenas, na tentativa de absorvê-los nas fileiras da civilização ou, caso não seja possível, exterminá- -los para dar passagem ao progresso.

We look for understand the relations established in the frontiers of the civilization between the Botocudo Indians and the military groups responsible for their pacification. It was analyzed the correspon- dences of the Indian Chief on that time in Minas Gerais (1818-1824), Guido Thomaz Marlière, and his procedure dynamics together with the Indian people, mainly the Puri, Coropó and Coroado, in general known as botocudos due to the objects they use on the lips and ears, similar to “botoques”. The construction of the National State, along the 19th century, deals with the issue of the relationship with the Indian people, in the attempt to absorbing them in the ranks of civilization or, if it is not possible, exterminates them to give way to the progress.
