INTRODUCTION: Ball possession constitutes the ratio between the time that a team remains with the ball and the total play ball time. This indicator characterizes successful teams, however identifying the profile at all levels in the competition is required. OBJECTIVE: To identify the relationship between ball possession and points earned in the Brazilian Championship and its difference between clubs at different levels in the competition. METHODOLOGY: Data were collected from all matches of 5 consecutive seasons of the Brazilian Championship between the years 2015 to 2019, totaling 1,900 games. The performance indicators selected were: ball possession per game for each team and total points obtained by the teams in the competition. Data were collected on the public website "whoscored.com". 5 groups of 4 teams each according to their final positions in the table with group 1 being the best placed. RESULTS: Group 1 had the highest averages, followed by groups 2, 4, 3 and 5. Comparing groups, only Group 3 and Group 4 didn’t show statistically significant difference. WhenPearson's correlation was performed, the value of 0.633 was obtained, that is, moderate correlation, with significance at the level of 0.01. CONCLUSION: In the Brazilian Championship, there is a significant relationship between ball possession and points earned, with the groups with the highest ball possession being at the top of the classification board.
