Abstract
Until the nineties the congada had no permission to take part in the Catholic Church rites in Brás Pires/MG. Since then the parish has experienced intense transformations. In that process, the congada has been breaking the taboo which restricted its participation in the Street Celebration, and is also being incorporated to the internal rites of the Patroness Party. More than a local conflict, the situation described is an expression of a conflict between two projects of the Roman Catholic Church: one connected to the Romanized postulates and the other to the Vatican II. In that dispute, it is clear the rise of the latter trend.
