Abstract
Water scarcity and the growing need for sustainable agricultural systems have encouraged the reuse of wastewater as an alternative to conventional irrigation. This study aimed to evaluate the economic feasibility of using dairy cattle wastewater for fertigation of corn grown for silage during the second cropping season at the Teaching, Research and Extension Unit in Dairy Cattle (UEPE-GL) of the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV). The methodology was based on the estimation of crop water demand and on a comparative cost analysis between two scenarios: conventional irrigation with raw water and fertigation with wastewater. The costs of crop establishment, irrigation system, energy, maintenance, and water-use charge were considered. The results indicated that the wastewater system presented a total annual cost of R$ 8,373.81, while the conventional system totaled R$ 11,470.38. The benefit-cost ratio was 1.17 for the wastewater system, indicating economic feasibility, whereas conventional irrigation presented a B/C ratio of 0.85, being considered economically unfeasible under the evaluated conditions. It is concluded that the use of dairy cattle wastewater in the irrigated production of corn for silage was more economically attractive than conventional management with raw water. In addition to reducing production costs, this practice may contribute to nutrient cycling in the soil and to the agricultural use of livestock effluents, provided that its application is properly managed according to crop water demand and the admissible nutrient load in the soil-plant system. Keywords: Fertigation; Agricultural reuse; Sustainability; Benefit-cost ratio; Production costs.
