Abstract
In the present study, the following aspects of the reproductive biology of Leporinus copelandii males were investigated: macro and microscopical morphology of the gonads, gonad somatic index (GSI), hepato somatic index (HSI), and celomatic fat index (CFI), at different stages of the reproductive cycle. The morphology of the gonads was similar to that observed for the majority of the teleost fishes. The maximum values of GSI, HSI and CFI were, respectively, 6,08±0,71 (Stage 2C); 1,31±0,15 (Stage 4); and 3,67±0,47 (Stage 1). Breeding-capable males were observed from August until September. Males in stage 4 were observed from November/98 until December/98 and on January/99.
