Tradição e modernidade: estudo sobre as representações e práticas culturais da benzeção

Abstract

A modernidade é frequentemente apontada como a responsável pelo rompimento das sociedades com as tradições passadas; entretanto, diversas manifestações culturais se mantêm em meio às transformações sociais, como é o caso da medicina popular por meio dos guardiões e dos praticantes dos ofícios de cura. Como resposta à pressão da modernidade, os praticantes dos ofícios populares de cura ressignificam suas práticas em uma espécie de hibridismo cultural entre o mágico, o religioso e o científico. Neste estudo analisou-se como a modernidade e a circularidade de conhecimentos, nos trânsitos rurais-urbanos, influenciam a tradição das práticas e do ofício da benzeção. Por meio de entrevistas e observação participante, focalizou-se aspectos da oralidade, gestualidade e demais elementos ritualísticos utilizados pelas benzedeiras da região de Viçosa - Minas Gerais. Buscou-se apresentar as similitudes e as diferenças entre as benzeções que ocorrem no meio rural e no meio urbano, evidenciando a incorporação de novos elementos aos rituais. Percebeu-se que as tecnologias digitais passam a compor os ritos e as benzedeiras começam a benzer à distância por meio de mensagens e através do celular, dando novos sentidos às representações e à eficácia da benzeção.Modernity is often pointed to as the responsible for disruptions of societies with previous traditions; however, several cultural manifestations remain in the midst of social change, such as folk medicine through the guardians and healers. In response to the pressure of modernity, practitioners of the popular healing trades reframed their practices into a kind of cultural hybridism between the magical, the religious, and the scientific. In the present study it was analyzed how the modernity and circularity of knowledge, in rural-urban transits, influence the tradition of benzeção practices. Through interviews and participant observation, focus was given on the aspects of orality, gesture and other ritualistic elements used by the faith healers in the region of Viçosa - Minas Gerais. This research aims to present the similarities and differences between the benzeções that occur in rural and urban areas, showing the incorporation of new elements in the rituals. Digital technologies has become part of the rituals, and the benzedeiras begin the benzer through cell phone messages, bringing new meanings to the representations and effectiveness of benzeção.
