Espécies forrageiras preferidas para o corte por Atta bisphaerica forel, 1908 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Abstract

Verificou-se a preferência de forrageamento de A. bisphaerica dentre oito espécies de gramíneas e uma de leguminosa. Utilizaram-se quatro colônias no campo e ofereceu-se às forrageadoras, em cada uma das trilhas, 1 g das folhas de cada espécie vegetal na forma de feixes, dispostos nas áreas de forrageamento. Ao final de cada teste os feixes foram colocados individualmente em pasa-filtros e secos em estufa, para a obtenção da massa seca. A partir disso, verificou-se que A. bisphaerica aumentou pouca seletividade em relação às espécies testadas. Somente Brachiaria decumbens, Melinis minutiflora e Leucaena leucocephala não foram cortadas, Em termos absolutos, Hyparrhenia rufa foi a espécie mais cortada; no entanto, não houve diferença significativa entre esta e Paspalum notatum, Permísetum clandestinum, Setaria anceps, Brachiaria brízantha e Panicum maximum. Todas essas gramíneas apresentam como característica em comum ausência de pêlos ou pêlos bem finos, e que parece favorecer o ataque de A. bisphaerica.

This work was conducted to determine which of nine forages was preferred by the glass-cutting ant Atta bisphaerica, Forel. One gram of leaves of each plant species was offered, in bundles, to the ant workers in each of two trails of four nests. At the end of each test the blmdles were individually placed in weighting tlasks, oven-dried and their dry mass obtained. The results showed that A. bisphaerica is not very selective as to the plant species cut. Only three forages, Brachiaria decwnbens, Melinis mínutiflora and Leucaena leucocephala were not much sought by the ant species. The highest cutting percentage occurred in Hyparrhenia rufa; the values found for Paspalum notatum, Pennisetum clandestinum, Setaria anceps, Brachiaria brizantha and Panicum maximum, however, did not differ significantly among themselves and from H. rufa (Tukey, p< 0.05). All of these forages present lack of pilosity or, when present, hairs ane very fine, what may favor plant attack by this leaf-cutter ant.
