Item Cat, cougar, and jaguar spermatogenesis: a comparative analysis(Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology, 2006-09) Paula, Tarcízio Antônio Rêgo; Matta, Sérgio Luiz Pinto da; Costa, Deiler SampaioThis work presents a comparative review about the spermatogenic process in cats (Felis domestica), jaguars (Panthera onca) and cougars (Puma concolor), with emphasis on testicular biometry, gonadossomatic index, volumetric proportion of testicular parenchyma components, tubular diameter, seminiferous epithelial height and seminiferous tubule length. It was an approach of the differences among the cell proportions that allowed conclusions about the overall yield of spermatogenic process and Sertoli cell index in three feline species. Item Interbular space characterization in adult capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) testis(Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology, 2007-03) Paula, Tarcízio Antônio Rego de; Matta, Sérgio Luiz Pinto da; Fonseca, Cláudio Cesar; Neves, Marco Túlio David das; Silva Jr., Valdemiro Amaro da; Costa, Deiler SampaioThis study aimed at the qualitative and quantitative characterization of the different intertubular tissue components in adult male capybara. Testes of 15 adult capybaras from a commercial slaughterhouse of wild animals were used. The average percentage of Leydig cells was 32.95 ± 10.03 %, whereas in the other components of the intertubular space it was 14.95 ± 4.79 %, thus the whole intertubular space totalized 47.91 ± 11.48 %. The average weight of the testes were 32.83 ± 4.78g, while the animals' body weight were around 52.37 kg and the gonadosomatic and leydigosomatic indexes were 0.125 ± 0.02% and 0.0411 ± 0.0148% respectively. It was concluded that the leydigosomatic index of the capybaras was lower than the one observed in rats, as well as the arrangement of the components in intertubular tissue was similar to pattern I of Fawcett's classification as was found in guinea-pigs and chinchillas.Item Ointment of Brassica oleracea var. capitata matures the extracellular matrix in skin wounds of Wistar rats(Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 2015) Sarandy, Mariáurea Matias; Novaes, Rômulo Dias; Matta, Sérgio Luiz Pinto da; Mezencio, Jose Mario da Silveira; Silva, Marcelo Barreto da; Zanuncio, José Cola; Gonçalves, Reggiani VilelaWound healing is a complex process that aims to restore damaged tissue. Phytotherapeutics, such as cabbage, Brassica oleracea var. capitata (Brassicaceae), and sunflower, Helianthus annuus L. (Asteraceae) oil, are used as wound healers. Five circular wounds, each 12 mm in diameter, were made in the dorsolateral region of each rat. The animals were divided into four groups: balsam (B. oleracea); ointment (B. oleracea); sunflower oil (Helianthus annuus); control (saline solution 0.9%). These products were applied daily for 20 days and every four days the tissues of different wounds were removed. The wound contraction area, total collagen, types I and III collagen, glycosaminoglycans, and tissue cellularity were analyzed. In the groups that received ointment and balsam there was reduction in the wound area on days 4, 8, 12, and 20. Throughout the trial period, the balsam and ointment groups showed a higher amount of total collagen, type I collagen, and glycosaminoglycan compared to the others groups. The rats in the groups treated with B. oleracea var. capitata showed a higher number of cells on days 8, 16, and 20. B. oleracea was effective in stimulating the maturation of collagen and increasing the cellularity, as also in improving the mechanical resistance of the newly formed tissue.
