Abstract
Anthropogenic activity is responsible for the contamination of the environment with heavy metals. Among these activities stand out the mining and the garbage generated by the population. Heavy metals can undergo leaching to reach the water table causing serious damage to the population that happens to use that water. The use of soils, with certain characteristics, as barriers for the movement of heavy metal ions is of fundamental importance for the preservation of the environment. Chemical and physical analyzes were performed to characterize 8 soil samples from the Viçosa-MG region. Higher clay content is important to prevent higher leaching of these metals to deeper layers of the soil. The analysis of pH and organic matter content is also fundamental for the decision of which soil will be used as a chemical barrier for heavy metals. The higher the pH and soil organic matter content, the lower the mobility of heavy metals.
