Abstract

The Antarctic Peninsula constitutes a climatic transition zone, with a contrast between the wetter and less cold west coast and the east coast, facing the Weddell Sea, characterized by sub-zero temperatures and low precipitation. Seymour Island, the largest ice-free area in the region and without active glaciers, exhibits widespread surface salinity. In the southwestern portion, the López de Bertodano Formation outcrops, a Cretaceous unit composed of clayey-silty sediments with sandy intercalations, whose homoclinal structure favors the development of cuesta-like reliefs and badland-type landscapes in a polar environment. The overall objective of this thesis is to understand the pedogenesis processes and soil-landscape relationships associated with the López de Bertodano Formation on Seymour Island, analyzing in an integrated way the role of the parent material, relief, and dry polar climate in the formation and differentiation of soils. To this end, fieldwork was carried out, with soil collection, as well as physical, chemical, mineralogical, micromorphological, and spectroscopic analyses. As a result, original studies on the pedogeomorphology and salinization of the López de Bertodano Formation are presented. The physical, chemical, and spectral variability of the soils of Seymour Island is mainly controlled by the parent material and the stratigraphic heritage of the geological formations, especially the López de Bertodano Formation. The sedimentary heterogeneity of this formation is preserved in the soil profiles, influencing the granulometric organization, the distribution of mineral constituents, and the establishment of different geochemical regimes. Sulfurization and buffering by fossiliferous carbonates control the geochemical equilibrium of the soils and favor the formation of secondary sulfates and the occurrence of salinization, which is widely distributed on the island and associated with low leaching under a semi-arid polar climate. Although salinization is mainly related to the parent material and sedimentary heritage, geomorphology and periglacial dynamics modulate the redistribution of solutes and the continuity of pedogenetic processes. The evolution of slopes, especially in cuesta systems, controls the exposure of new strata, the circulation of solutions, and the accumulation of salts, demonstrating a co- evolutionary relationship between soils and relief. Thus, the landscape of Seymour Island results from the interaction between lithological controls, geochemical processes, and cryogenic dynamics, configuring a unique pedogeomorphological system. Keywords: pedogenesis; salinization; pedogeomorphology.
