Abstract
A Binary Differential Equation (BDE) is an implicit differential equation that defines up to two directions in the plane. In this work, we consider BDEs of the form a(x,y)dy² + 2b(x,y)dy\,dx + c(x,y)dx² = 0, where a, b, and c are smooth functions on an open subset U of R². The equations of lines of curvature and asymptotic lines are examples of BDEs of the form above. Therefore, the results developed here can be used to understand their behavior on surfaces in R³. Moreover, this work advances by generalizing the metric of the ambient space, with a focus on Lorentzian and degenerate metrics, as well as by generalizing the self- adjoint linear operator that defines these curves. In this way, A-principal curvature lines, A-asymptotic lines, and lightlike lines are defined, with particular emphasis on the local study of their behavior and singularities on their respective discriminant sets. Keywords: binary differential equations; lines of curvature; asymptotic lines; Minkowski space
