Abstract
Given the intensification of the environmental crisis and the need to strengthen educational practices linked to a critical understanding of the relationships between society and nature, this research investigated how geosciences can contribute to the development of comprehensive Environmental Education in the school context. The study aimed to analyze how Geography teachers from basic education in public schools located on the campus of the Federal University of Viçosa and undergraduate Geography students from the same university perceive the presence of geosciences and Environmental Education in teacher education curricula and in the Brazilian National Common Curricular Base (BNCC). Regarding the methodology, a mixed-methods approach (qualitative and quantitative) was adopted, combining literature review, document analysis and the implementation of workshops accompanied by questionnaires. During these activities, topics related to Earth dynamics, minerals, rocks, soils and the water cycle were addressed, always seeking to articulate these subjects with Environmental Education. The results indicated that, although these themes are present in the curricula, they appear in a fragmented manner, which ultimately hinders the development of critical thinking regarding environmental issues. Structural and curricular limitations for the implementation of practical activities involving geosciences and Environmental Education were also identified. On the other hand, the workshops demonstrated potential to support teacher education by strengthening participatory methodologies, fostering closer connections with students’ daily lives, and promoting critical thinking.
