Abstract
Over 200 years studies about cattle size are being accomplished and results show that the production system is deeply connected with ideal size. This study was developed with data of Nellore cattle herds, from different regions of Brazil, raised on pasture, with the goal to study cow productivity, through the ratio weaning weight of the calf/weight of the cow at weaning (RPD). The study was realized with 4.242 information pairs of weaning weight of the calf and cow weight at weaning. Cow weight was converted in metabolic weight (metabolic weight = weight 0,75), because metabolic weight is more associated with efficiency as live weight. Analysis of residuals was used to identify and remove outliers and, the delta method for obtaining the confidence interval to calculate the standard error of the estimate of heritability. The heritability estimate for RPD was 0,31(0,03), allowing the conclusion that using RPD as selection criteria should promote gains in cow efficiency of Nellore cattle. The use of RPD as phenotypic selection criteria has showed problems in some studies, but its inclusion in selection indexes, with economic weights, seems to be viable.
