Representações da morte infantil durante o século XIX no Rio de Janeiro e na Inglaterra: um esboço comparativo preliminar

Abstract

O presente artigo procederá a um esforço comparativo sobre as práticas e representações que cercam a morte infantil no Rio de Janeiro e na Inglaterra no século XIX. Considerando a diversidade radical que uma primeira leitura sugere entre os casos e a existência de estudo para ambos, buscar-se-á uma melhor apreensão das respectivas particularidades e reavaliar algumas hipóteses gerais acerca da evolução da sensibilidade em relação à infância no Ocidente.This paper will carry out a comparison between the data and discussions on the practices and attitudes surrounding child death at Rio de Janeiro and England in the nineteenth century. Considering the radical diversity that a first reading suggests between them and the existence of studies for both, it will seek a better capture of the specificity in each one and review some general hypotheses about the evolution of sensitivity on childhood in the West.
