Brazil’s dependence on imported mineral fertilizers, together with the environmental impacts associated with their production and use, reinforces the need to evaluate alternative nutrient sources for agricultural systems. In this context, this study evaluated the effects of four organic composts applied at different rates on the growth, yield, and nutrient accumulation of BRO 68® broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica), as well as the residual effects of these composts on the dry matter production of BRS 1501 millet (Pennisetum glaucum) grown in succession. The Composta Vida (C-Vida), APEPI without phosphate enrichment (P), APEPI enriched with rock phosphate (P+), and Acaiaca Family Farming (Aca) composts were characterized according to their chemical and sanitary attributes. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, arranged in a 4 × 4 + 1 factorial scheme, consisting of four composts, four rates equivalent to 150, 300, 450, and 600 kg ha¹ of nitrogen (N), and an unfertilized control. The full rates were applied before broccoli cultivation, and millet was subsequently grown in the same pots without additional fertilization. Broccoli canopy area, shoot dry matter mass, inflorescence fresh matter mass, shoot nutrient content, and millet dry matter mass were evaluated. The composts contained heavy metal concentrations within the legal limits assessed, whereas the C-Vida compost had a most probable number of thermotolerant coliforms above the permitted limit. In broccoli, increasing application rates quadratically promoted canopy area growth and increased shoot N accumulation, but did not result in a linear increase in inflorescence fresh matter production. Marketable yield was more efficient at the intermediate rate, particularly with the Aca and P+ composts applied at 450 kg ha¹ of N. The P, K, Ca, Mg, and S contents were not significantly affected by the treatments, probably because of the high initial soil fertility. Millet dry matter mass increased linearly as a function of the rates applied before broccoli cultivation, demonstrating the residual effect of the organic composts. It was concluded that the evaluated composts have agronomic potential; however, their management should consider not only their total N content but also the nutrient composition of the material, soil fertility, the crop being grown, and the objective of the production system. In this study, application rates were more relevant than fertilizer sources to marketable broccoli yield, N accumulation in broccoli tissue, and the residual effect on millet dry matter production. Keywords: composting; agroecology; organic fertilization
