This essay unfolds the narratives of the author Ana Paula Maia, searching to understand how her characters entitled “men-beasts” can indicate types of humanity and masculinity and how their scenarios can create a sense of country. For this, we articulate an interdisciplinary bibliography about contemporary Brazil, Brazilian literature, trends in fiction and notions of animality, violence, cruelty and gender. These stories and characters point to extratextual realities, such as animal exploitation, toxic masculinity and the prevalence of femicide - conclusion based on the analysis of interspecies relationships, the landscapes induced by industrial capitalism and the scenes of violence in soap operas and reading authors such as bell hooks, Judith Butler, Michel Foucault and Paul B. Preciado. Keywords: Contemporary literature. Biopolitics. Zoopoetics.
