This work aimed to predict genetic gain by using the correlated selection principle, having as its main objective grain production, and as secondary objective, the primary components and some of the secondary components of grain production. A Fs soybean population from - originated from a crossbreeding FT-Cometa >< IAC-8, in Viçosa, Minas Gerais, in 1992/1993 - was used. Out of all the components studied, pod number per plant had the greatest expected gain, revealing to be an efficient indicator of the most productive plants, since productivity indirect gain via this characteristic was close to the indirect gain. The secondary component, i. e., the number of days needed for maturation, was not an efficient indicator of the most productive plants, although it presented a high correlation with and high effect on grain production.
