Abstract
In the process of obtaining pest resistant varieties in breeding programs, it is important to select genotypes that are sources of resistance. The passion fruit, Passiflora edulis Sims, is the most cultivated species in the world. Among the main pests P. edulis is the red mite Tetranychus mexicanus McGregor (Acari: Tetranychidae). In integrated pest management programs resistant varieties is considered as one of the best methods of pest control. In spite of the importance of T. mexicanus as P. edulis pest and the potential use of plant resistance in the management of this mite, few studies are available on the subject. Thus, the objectives of this work were to select P. edulis progenies resistant to T. mexicanus and to elucidate mechanisms of resistance antixenosis and antibiosis. In the experiments were evaluated 25 progenies of passion fruit. Two bioassays were conducted, the first was a free choice test in arenas to evaluate resistance by antixenosis. The second was a non-choice test for antibiosis resistance assessment. The progenies P4, P6, P7, P11, P18, P19, P22, P23 and P24 of P. edulis exhibit resistance to T. mexicanus by antixenosis. The progenies P4, P9, P13, P18, and P23 of P. edulis exhibit resistance to T. mexicanus by antibiosis, adversely affecting the development, survival and reproduction of this mite. .
