Abstract
Agricultural areas affected by dam failures had their land covered by tailings and underwent landscape modification, including changes to the chemical and physical composition of the soil. Given this new scenario, where settled tailings formed the surface layer used for agricultural production, research was needed to identify management strategies that could boost agricultural productivity and mitigate water stress in these areas. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of growing maize (Zea mays) in areas covered by mining tailings, quantify crop water consumption, and assess the effects of using the microalga Scenedesmus obliquus to mitigate water deficit conditions. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in Viçosa, Minas Gerais, using a completely randomized design (CRD) with seven treatments and three replicates, totaling 21 experimental units. Twenty-seven variables were evaluated, including growth, development, biometric characteristics, root system traits, yield performance, and water use. Foliar application of the microalga Scenedesmus obliquus proved more efficient during the maize vegetative phase (V10–VT) than during the reproductive phase (VT–R1). Variables showing significant gains from microalgae application included total dry mass, grain yield, and ear yield. Maize performance was primarily affected by water deficit; the use of the microalga is recommended as a complementary management strategy during drought periods. Water consumption ranged from 516.8 mm cycle¹ for fully irrigated maize to 105.2 mm cycle¹ for maize subjected to water deficit during the (V10–R1) phases. Water consumption in the other treatments fell within this intermediate range. The study also indicated that soils covered with mining tailings can be used for maize cultivation. Water deficit conditions affect productivity, particularly when occurring during the vegetative stage. Foliar application of the microalga Scenedesmus obliquus in maize crops does not impair the development of the plant's commercially valuable organs and helps mitigate the effects of water deficit. Keywords: irrigation; on-farm microalgae; environmental restoration; technosols; Zea mays
