Abstract
Onychomycosis currently represents a growing concern in public health due to its high prevalence in the population and the well-recognised difficulty of treatment. Conventional therapies available on the market often show limited effectiveness and may also be associated with relevant side effects and multiple drug interactions, particularly in patients with comorbidities. Therefore, the search for new antifungal agents, especially those derived from natural sources, has become a promising alternative to expand therapeutic options for this highly prevalent clinical condition. This study directly examined the antifungal potential of the extract of Piptadenia gonocantha in the treatment of onychomycosis. The findings demonstrated that the plant extract constitutes a promising antifungal agent in the management of the infection, promoting clinical improvement of the nail plate and showing good tolerability. Furthermore, its potential use as a therapeutic alternative stands out for contributing to the mitigation of resistance associated with the prolonged use of conventional antifungal drugs, reinforcing its relevance as an innovative strategy in the treatment of fungal nail infections. Keywords: onychomycosis; phytotherapeutic drugs; natural extracts; antifungal agents; treatment
