Abstract
Brazil, previously characterized as a country of immigration, has also become a country of emigration, with approximately 4.9 million Brazilians currently living abroad (BRASIL, 2021; BRASIL, 2024). In this context, movements aimed at preserving Portuguese as a Heritage Language have emerged, organized by families, teachers, non-governmental organizations, and associations seeking to maintain the language in diasporic settings. The literature indicates that the maintenance of Portuguese as a Heritage Language extends beyond linguistic transmission, encompassing affective, identity-related, and cultural ties (Lico, 2011; Mendes, 2012; Moroni, 2015). More recently, scholars have highlighted its role in linguistic and cultural diffusion, as heritage speakers act as vectors for the circulation of Portuguese and Brazilian culture in multilingual contexts (BRASIL, 2021; Chaves, 2023; Saliés and Spitz, 2023). In this light, this study analyzes the social role of Instagram in the diffusion of Portuguese as a Heritage Language. The research adopts a qualitative interpretative approach of an exploratory-descriptive nature, based on the analysis of a corpus of Instagram posts. The final corpus comprises 729 posts collected from 16 Instagram accounts selected through searches conducted on Google and Instagram. Data were analyzed following the six phases of Thematic Analysis proposed by Braun and Clarke (2006; 2012). The findings indicate that, although a large proportion of the analyzed accounts self-identify as educational, their content reveals that Instagram is predominantly used as a digital showcase for visibility and symbolic circulation. The primary target audience consists of families in the Brazilian diaspora, while some posts indirectly address children and adolescents. In addition, posting frequency varies across accounts, ranging from regular publication patterns to seasonal activity associated with commemorative dates. These findings suggest that, despite its global reach and popularity among young people, Instagram remains underutilized as a structured tool for the transmission and maintenance of Portuguese as a Heritage Language. Keywords: Portuguese as a Heritage Language; digital socialnetworks; Instagram; linguistic and cultural diffusion; digital showcase; affectivity; identity.
