Revisão taxonômica do gênero Massartella Lestage, 1930 (Leptophlebiidae: Atalophlebiinae) da Mata Atlântica

Abstract

Massartella Lestage, 1930 é um gênero Neotropical de Atalophlebiinae com distribuição no sudeste do Brasil, nordeste da Argentina, e o Escudo das Guianas ao longo da fronteira entre a Venezuela e o Brasil. O gênero foi estabelecido para incluir Atalophlebia brieni, espécie-tipo descrita a partir de machos e fêmeas adultas. Mais tarde o gênero foi redescrito e redefinido, incluindo ainda a descrição de novas espécies e a redescrição da espécie-tipo com base em adultos e, pela primeira vez, descrição de suas ninfas. Atualmente o gênero inclui cinco espécies separadas em duas linhagens, uma para a Mata Atlântica, incluindo as espécies M. brieni e M. alegrettae, e outra para o Pantepui, incluindo as espécies M. venezuelensis, M. devani e M. hirsuta. Ao analisarmos material de diversas localidades atribuídos à espécie-tipo, e notarmos uma série de diferenças morfológicas consistentes em adultos, ninfas e ovos, tornou-se evidente que o que denominamos M. brieni trata-se de um complexo de espécies a ela relacionadas. Adicionalmente, os caracteres tradicionalmente utilizados para descrever as espécies da linhagem da Mata Atlântica foram baseados nos adultos, os quais, à primeira vista, apresentam similaridade. Por essas razões, o conhecimento de novas espécies, a diagnose de espécies já conhecidas e até mesmo a associação entre imaturos e adultos tem sido comprometida historicamente. Portanto, o presente trabalho, baseado no estudo das espécies do gênero Massartella, apresenta uma revisão taxonômica da linhagem da Mata Atlântica de forma a elucidar e ampliar o seu conhecimento. Massartella brieni é re-descrita e sua ninfas associadas e descritas corretamente pela primeira vez com base em sua localidade tipo; M. alegrettae é re- descrita, se descreve pela primeira vez a fêmea adulta e sua ninfa é efetivamente associada e descrita; M. frushtorfferi é re-validada com base em material da localidade tipo; e, por fim, oito novas espécies são descritas baseadas em ninfas e adultos. Com o presente trabalho, o número de espécies do gênero para a linhagem da Mata Atlântica aumenta significativamente, passando de duas para onze espécies. Palavras-chave: Ephemeroptera. Taxonomia. Mata-Atlântica.Massartella Lestage, 1930 is a Neotropical genus of Atalophlebiinae with distribution in southeastern Brazil, northeastern Argentina, and the Guiana Shield along the border between Venezuela and Brazil. The genus was established to include Atalophlebia brieni, a type species described from adult males and females. Later the genus was redescribed and redefined, including the description of new species and the redescription of the type species based on adults and, for the first time, description of their nymphs. Currently the genus includes five species separated into two lineages, one for the Atlantic Forest, including the species M. brieni and M. alegrettae, and another for the Pantepui, including the species M. venezuelensis, M. devani and M. hirsuta. By analyzing material from several localities attributed to the type species, and noticing a series of consistent morphological differences in adults, nymphs and eggs, it became evident that what we call M. brieni is a complex of species related to it. Additionally, the characters traditionally used to describe species of the Atlantic Forest lineage were based on adults, which, at first glance, show similarity. For these reasons, the knowledge of new species, the diagnosis of already known species and even the association between immatures and adults has been historically compromised. Therefore, the present work, based on the study of species of the genus Massartella, presents a taxonomic review of the Atlantic Forest lineage in order to elucidate and expand its knowledge. Massartella brieni is re-described and its associated nymphs are correctly described for the first time based on their type locality; M. alegrettae is re-described, the adult female is described for the first time and her nymph is effectively associated and described; M. frushtorfferi is re-validated based on type locality material; and, finally, eight new species are described based on nymphs and adults. With the present work, the number of species of the genus for the Atlantic Forest lineage increases significantly, going from two to eleven species. Keywords: Ephemeroptera. Taxonomy.
