Antixenose. Heterose. Solanum lycopersicum. Traça-do- tomateiro.
The plants have defense strategies to reduce or prevent phytophagous attack and survive in the environment. They can have chemical constituents, which are synthesized to defend against pests, these chemical constituents can be toxic or repellent to arthropods. This type of defense is expressed in plants of the Solanaceae family, such as tomato plant. However, domestication altered the interactions between plants, insects and their natural enemies, increasing the susceptibility of plants to pests. The main pest of tomato plant is Tuta absoluta, it can reduce productivity and increase control costs. However, plant breeding can be an alternative to other control methods, as it can increase the effectiveness of pest control and reduce costs. Thus, the objectives were to study the resistance, the hybrid vigor (heterosis and heterobeltiosis) of the accessions of tomato plants crossed with the commercial variety 'Santa Clara' and the toxicity of the main chemical constituents of these plants to T. absoluta. The bioassays of antixenosis, antibiosis and relative toxicity of chemical constituents were made. Antixenosis and antibiosis bioassays, six treatments were performed: ‘Santa Clara’, PI127826, PI134417, BGH985, SC x PI127826, SC x PI134417 and SC x BGH985 with four replicates, In antixenosis, the number of eggs per treatment was evaluated at 24 and 48 h after the release of adults and then the non-preference index for oviposition was calculated. In antibiosis, the percentage of larvae and pupae mortality, pupal weight and sex ratio were evaluated. The concentrations of the chemical constituents 2-tridecanone, p-cymene, α-tomatine and coumarin were determined to reduce 50, 80 and 90% of the population of T. absoluta. PI134417 was the one with the lowest number of eggs and was the most deterrent in the 24 and 48 h times. PI134417 and BHG985 had the highest mortality rates of T. absoluta caterpillars. SC x BGH985, SC x PI127826 and SC x PI134417 showed negative heterosis for survival and positive for caterpillar mortality and oviposition. SC x BGH985 showed negative heterobeltiosis for oviposition and SC x PI127826 showed positive heterobeltiosis for caterpillar mortality and negative for survival. The α-tomatine constituent had the lowest LC50 (4.9 µg insect-1 for first instar caterpillars and 6.8 µg insect-1 for third instar caterpillars) compared to tridecanone, p-cymene and coumarin. The α-tomatine was 60 times more toxic than tridecanone. Therefore the results demonstrated that treatment PI134417 was the most efficient in the control of T. absoluta. Heterosis can be explored in SC x PI127826, SC x PI134417 and SC x BGH985 hybrids for resistance to T. absoluta in a breeding program. The α-tomatine was the most toxic chemical constituent for T. absoluta caterpillars. Keywords: Antibiosis. Antixenosis. Heterosis. Solanum lycopersicum. Tomato pinworm.
