Adaptations of the gastrointestinal tract of bats to different feeding habits have ensured these evolutionary success, allowing rapid food processing and satisfactory nutrient absorption. This study described and compared the stomach and intestines of Anoura caudifer, Artibeus lituratus and Myotis nigricans, three species of bats with different diets. The bats were captured in Atlantic Forest fragments in the municipalities of Bicas and Viçosa in Minas Gerais. For histological processing, organs were weighed and sectioned. Tissue samples were processed according to routine methods for histological, histochemical and ultrastructural analysis. Through the results obtained, it was understood that there are peculiar morphophysiological characteristics in each species, revealing adaptations to each type of diet. The stomach of the fruit bat A. lituratus differs by having a triangular shape, with a cardiac vestibule, prominent blind bottom and elongated pyloric portion. Regarding the histological observations of the stomach, similarities between the species were identified, such as: increased internal circular muscle in the pyloric region for the formation of the gastroduodenal sphincter; prominent ganglia in the myenteric plexus between the muscle sub-layers; and neutral mucins being the most abundant in the stomach of the three species. As the differences, the cellular distribution in the gastric glands in the different regions; the abundant adipose tissue in the submucosa of A. lituratus and the significant histometric differences in the layers of the gastric regions stand out. No macroscopic difference was identified between the small and large intestines, however, the constituents of the segments, when compared between the different species, showed significant histometric differences. In its mucosa, the small intestine exhibited large villi with various shapes along the tube in all three species. Other interesting features in these animals are the presence of Paneth cells throughout the intestine; prominent striated border throughout the intestinal tube, including the large intestine; presence of Peyer's patches at the ileum/colon junction in all three species, and in the rectum, lymphoid nodules in A. caudifer and A. lituratus. Histochemistry made it possible to observe in the intestines the calliciform cells secreting acid, neutral and mixed mucins. The argentaphyne endocrine cells were present only in the fruit bats A. lituratus, but argyrophilic cells were found in all species, with higher representation in thelarge intestine of A. lituratus. The morphophysiological characteristics highlighted in this study indicate the optimization in digestion, processing and absorption of nutrients by the digestive tract, and consequently, guarantee to these animals fast energy availability, and fast emptying of the tube, favoring flight.
